Fucking Hell

November 1, 2008

The following passages are lyrics to songs that some of the eight and nine year old girls that I work with bring in to listen and dance to. We have a CD player that the girls can grab whenever they want to listen to music. I’ve been dancing with them to these songs all year, not paying any attention to the lyrics. But yesterday I caught the word ‘pornography’ in one of the songs and I was like what the fuck!!? So I came home and did a search of a couple of these songs. This is what I found (***WARNING: could be triggering for survivors of prostitution and/or pornography***):

Low

[Verse 1:]
I ain’t never seen nuthin that’ll make me go,
This crazy all night spendin my dough
Had a million dollar vibe and a bottle to go
Dem birthday cakes, they stole the show
So sexual, she was flexible
Professional, drinkin X and ooo
Hold up wait a minute, do I see what I think I
Whoa
Did I think I seen shorty get low
Ain’t the same when it’s up that close
Make it rain, I’m makin it snow
Work the pole, I got the bank roll
Imma say that I prefer them no clothes
I’m into that, I love women exposed
She threw it back at me, I gave her more
Cash ain’t a problem, I know where it goes

She had them

[Chorus:]
Apple Bottom Jeans [Jeans]
Boots with the fur [With the fur]
The whole club was lookin at her
She hit the flo [She hit the flo]
Next thing you know
Shawty got low low low low low low low low

Them baggy sweat pants
And the Reeboks with the straps [With the straps]
She turned around and gave that big booty a smack
[Ayy]
She hit the flo [She hit the flo]
Next thing you know
Shawty got low low low low low low low low

[Verse 2:]
Hey
Shawty what I gotta do to get you home
My jeans full of gwap
And they ready for Shones
Cadillacs Maybachs for the sexy grown
Patrone on the rocks that’ll make you moan

One stack (come on)
Two stacks (come on)
Three stacks (come on, now that’s three grand)

What you think I’m playin baby girl
I’m the man, I’ll bend the rubber bands

That’s what I told her, her legs on my shoulder
I knew it was ova, that Henny and Cola
Got me like a Soldier
She ready for Rover, I couldn’t control her
So lucky oo me, I was just like a clover
Shorty was hot like a toaster
Sorry but I had to fold her,
Like a pornography poster
She showed her

Chorus

[Verse 3:]
Whoa
Shawty
Yea she was worth the money
Lil mama took my cash,
And I ain’t want it back,
The way she bit that rag,
Got her them paper stacks,
Tattoo Above her crack,
I had to handle that,

I was on it, sexy woman, let me shownin
They be want it two in the mornin
I’m zonin in them rosay bottles foamin
She wouldn’t stop, made it drop
Shorty did that pop and lock,
Had to break her off that gwap
Gah it was fly just like my glock

Chorus

So all year girls as young as 5 have been dancing along to this shit. I can’t really describe how sickened I am by this. I can’t believe that the parents of the girls who bring this stuff in to listen to haven’t cottoned on to these lyrics. Do they know what these songs are saying? Do they care?

  1. Fucking horrible isn’t it? But SO many folks don’t listen to the lyrics of pop songs, or if they do dismiss it as not mattering.

Well it does. And if you listen to it and understand it how can you not be disgusted by it?

  2. I agree with you entirely. Makes me remember my sixth grade Hebrew language teacher who banned Ricky Martin from the classroom recess after she heard “she took my money
she must’ve slipped me a sleeping pill,” and told us that there was nothing funny about slipping someone a pill. Parents complained, but she said that if they had no problem with their children hearing this, she wondered about their sanity.

I’m glad my parents only allowed me to listen to traditional Jewish music, opera and classical music till I was sixteen. They really protected me a lot.

  3. My guess is these parents either don’t know or they know and shake their heads WHILE LAUGHING ALONG. Meaning, no strong appearance of revulsion to make these girls think twice.

  4. Yes, it *definitely* matters, Saranga.

Sounds like you had a pretty cool Hebrew teacher Hotspur.

Yeah, I get what you are saying miriam. I’m going to talk to the manager of the centre about this issue and what we should do about it. Because if we ban them from listening to this music then they’ll want to know why and they’ll try and listen to the lyrics more closely. But if we let it stand then they will be absorbing these messages subconciously. This stuff does serious damage to girls’ self-esteem. Why else would the numbers of girls who self-harm and starve themselves, be sky rocketing?

I was thinking that maybe we could give a print out of the lyrics to the parents of the girls who are bringing this stuff in. And let the parents know that the material is unacceptable and why. HTen it would be up to the parents to pay attention to and regulate what music the girls are listening to. But something has to be done about it. It is totally unacceptable for children, male and female, to be exposed to these massages, regardless of whether they understand it or not.

  5. I think the best thing to come out of this would be a roundtable discussion of the implications of these lyrics and how they affect the socialization of little girls.

There’s plenty of other things to dance to besides that crap.

  6. ergh. reminds me of a job I had one summer…working in the public library back home. The kids from the nearby elementary school used to come by every day.

Well, one day one of the young girls was singing along with something on her discman (which she wasn’t supposed to be using in the library, but what the hell? Some rap song or other, don’t know which with rather disturbing lyrics.

I was freaked on multiple levels:

    1) wow, that’s mysogynistic

    2) I’ve met her mother…why is she allowing this?

    3) Those are really sexual lyrics. If her mother is any indication, she’s going to be beating men and possibly women off with a stick in 9 or so years, so why rush into it now?

Number three, I think, is an important point. Kids, particularly girls, get sexualized WAY too early these days. For example, there is a certain young woman who is in my…extended family circle. Barely fourteen, and what’s her facebook picture? A closeup of her breasts. At fourteen, this is what she thinks is really important about her.

  7. Wow. That’s disgusting. It makes me so sad for young girls especially.

  8. Now this is a subject that you will get no disagreement from me on. There’s not a sane person in the world who can argue that current mainstream rap isn’t misogynistic. Unfortunately, most people just laugh it off, including many who I would consider sane. My girlfriend listens to this type of music a lot, and it’s prompted many a debate over whether or not this type of music is acceptable. It makes me sick to see little girls listening to shit like this.

  9. I don’t think they know, I hardly see how they could tell. It seems like parents these days are lost (in America), they don’t want to hear these tunes, so they shut the door.

It’s tragic, absolutely, that pop culture and music is furthering the girl hurting temperaments of man, but it’s been going on for so long and built up so far, that it will take some incredible feats of fire to bring it all down.

The type of stuff I’ve been witnessing, even on youtube by young boys is incredibly disturbing to me. We are in a fix.

  10. Yeah, that is true. I think a lot of mothers feel pretty powerless about this stuff too. They may realise that something isn’t right but they have no way of preventing their sons and daughters from being exposed to this stuff. Misogyny and the sexualisation of female peoples is so insidious.
